Diya painting is the art of decorating small clay lamps called diyas. These lamps are often used in festivals like Diwali, but painted diyas can also be beautiful decorations for any occasion. People paint colourful designs, patterns, or pictures on the diyas using special paints that stick to clay. Some add glitter, small jewels, or other decorations to make their diyas extra special. Each painted diya becomes a unique, handmade piece of art.
How?
Start with a clean, dry clay diya. Sketch your design lightly in pencil if you want. Use acrylic paints or paints made for pottery to add your colours and designs. Paint the inside of the diya a solid colour, then add designs to the outside. You can use thin brushes for detailed work or sponges for textures. Let each color dry before adding the next. Finish with glitter glue or stick-on jewels if you like. Seal the paint with a clear varnish to make it last longer.
